Challenging times! Spencer Brenneman Ring Leader Douglas Spencer checks in with some of his personal strategies for getting through them.

Hello! Douglas Spencer here with another Brand Minute during week 20 of Shelter in Place. Seriously, it could be week 10 or week 20. Honestly, I’ve lost count?

As I’ve said before, I’m always trying to find ways to make the most of this situation. One thing I’ve been thinking about lately is the idea of focus and how easily it gets fragmented.

Focus fragmentation is a phenomenon we see with almost all our clients, but especially with mission-driven organizations. What is it? Focus fragmentation is the result of honing in on whichever issues seem most pressing at any given time, day after day, month after month, year after year.

It creeps up on you. Ever talk to someone who, after fighting it for years, suddenly gets glasses and is amazed by how much different the world looks? (There’s a Will & Grace episode dedicated to Karen getting glasses. Very funny.)

Anyway, focus fragmentation for organizations works the same way. It’s hard to notice when the day to day takes up all your attention.

Check out my latest blog post on the topic at brandstrategy.blog. I also want to let you know that I’m a victim of this phenomenon too and am working on rectifying it myself. There are some changes coming to Spencer Brenneman, but I’ll leave it at that for now. We can all benefit from some suspense other than WHEN ARE WE GETTING OUT OF HERE!

And, before I sign off, a quick shout out to nurses because we’re about to start National Nurses Week, none of whom are watching because they’re too busy saving our lives! Please stay home, so we don’t make their lives harder than they already are.

OK, all for now. So stay positive, stay healthy, and remember, we will find our way. Thanks!
